ROSE BOWL

The Rose Bowl Competition was established in 1978. The winner received a silver rose bowl donated by the Rotary Club of Humber. The scholarship at first was $200, donated by Marquis Ltd., the operator or the Colonel’s Take Home in Corner Brook and Deer Lake. In 1980, Marquis Ltd. increased the scholarship to $300. In 1985, the firm instituted a new awards programme under which it began an annual contribution of $1000 which was to be divided into five scholarships of $200, and North Star Cement Ltd. began an annual donation of $100 to sustain the $300 scholarship which accompanies the Rose Bowl. That continued until 1988. For the 1989 Festival, a scholarship in memory of the late Howard Matthews was established. That year the scholarship was $500, which was donated by the Corner Brook Rotary Club and the Corner Brook Rotary Music Festival Association. Beginning with the 1990 Festival, the amount of the scholarship was increased to $750, contributed by the Corner Brook Rotary Club, the Corner Brook Rotary Music Festival Association and the late Hayward Matthews’ children in Hayward’s memory.

In 1994, separate Senior Rose Bowl and Junior Rose Bowl awards were established. The Senior Rose Bowl award is a perpetual rose bowl trophy on which the winner’s name is inscribed. The winner of the competition also receives a miniature rose bowl and a cash award of $500, which this year is donated by the Alteen Family. The other participants receive a $200 cash award, which this year is donated by the Rotary Music Festival Association.

The Junior Rose Bowl award is a perpetual rose bowl trophy on which the name of the winner is inscribed. The winner of the competition also receives a miniature rose bowl and a cash award of $250, which this year is donated by the Coleman Management Group.
